Queensland is often aptly referred to as the ‘Holiday State’. It comprises a huge area of 1 734 157 sq km, a population of just over 4 million and many beautiful holiday destinations such as the Great Barrier Reef, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and some 1 955 islands scattered along the coast. The coastline itself is almost 7 000 km in length. The Great Dividing Range runs parallel with the coast and inland of the Cairns area spectacular scenery and agricultural land can be found around the Atherton Tablelands. The richest farming lands are located in the south eastern part of the state, the Darling Downs. There is an enormous Outback area stretching north and west with the Tropic of Capricorn found running through Rockhampton and Longreach. The stunning Cape York Peninsula at the very tip of Australia is considered one of Australia’s last frontiers with a population of only about 10 000. The famous Wet season in the tropical north is between Nov/Dec - Apr/May when it can get very hot. The remainder of the year tends to be cooler and drier. Brisbane, the state’s capital, is situated on the Brisbane River and is Australia’s third largest city with a population of 1 820 400. Tourism is one of Qld’s main industries.
